Our Guide to Creating a Family-Friendly Kitchen Space

When designing your kitchen, it’s important to consider all your needs for the space. Whether you have a young, growing family, or teens who spend time doing homework at the counter – your space should be suited to your every kitchen needs.

Kitchen Craftsmen are experts in crafting bespoke kitchens, so no matter what your family looks like, we can tailor your space to suit everyone.

Choose your layout

From open-plan living to something a little more divided, it’s important to consider the layout of your kitchen and how it fits your needs. From spacious benchtops for baking with little ones to a cosy corner study nook for teens. An island style is ideal for families that like to entertain and share their space, or you could consider a U-shaped kitchen to keep everyone involved, but still want to maintain some distance between activities.

Fixtures & Finishes

If you’re starting a family, or already have young children, choosing fixtures and finishes becomes both a style and safety decision. It’s important to think about cupboards, doors and drawers that might be at head height and look into handles with soft edges, that can’t cause too many sharp knocks.

Choosing benchtops and cabinetry that won’t show grubby little fingerprints is also a key part of designing a family-friendly kitchen. We recommend looking at Thermolaminate or solid acrylic cabinetry for easy cleaning and durability, along with engineered stone and laminate benchtops that won’t be chipped, stained or scratched with the day-to-day chaos of family life.

During the planning stages, your designer will make helpful fixture and finish recommendations, based on what your family kitchen needs.

Make room for the kitchen sink

When designing your perfect family kitchen, including the right storage and sink solutions for your needs is important. If you’re a meal prep family, having enough bench space is key in helping you prepare for the busy week ahead. The next thing to consider is how you’ll be using your washing-up space. Will you need a single, deep sink to wash pots and pans, and a family-sized dishwasher to put plates and utensils in? Or would you prefer to have a double sink space that can be used for dual purposes? No matter how your family spends time in the kitchen, we are here to help make your space perfect for you.

Your kitchen is the heart of your home, and the creative Kitchen Craftsmen designers are here to help you build your perfect family kitchen. Visit one of our five showrooms and chat to our expert team today.
