Custom Coloured Glass
Our custom-coloured glass comes from DGW, who will colour match it to whatever shade you like. It’s a wonderful choice for a busy family kitchen, because a single sheet has no grout lines and no joins, so a quick wipe with a cloth takes care of pasta sauce and little handprints alike. You can match it to your cabinetry for a cohesive look, or let it become a feature in the kitchen like “Basalt”, the dark metallic painted glass splashback pictured here.
Mirrored Glass
Mirrored glass, also from DGW, works wonders in a kitchen that doesn’t get much natural light. It throws light back into the room and makes the whole space feel bigger and brighter, which is why we recommend it so often in galley kitchens and older Perth homes where the kitchen sits at the back of the house. You can soften it with a smoked or bronze tint if a clear mirror feels like too much. Those tints are far more forgiving with splashes too.
Matched Stone from Benchtop to Wall
This is the look everyone is asking for right now. Your benchtop material carries straight up the wall, the joins disappear and the whole kitchen feels calmer for it. Warm creams are where most people are landing at the moment. Laminam Diamond Cream is a favourite of ours, with soft marble veining and a creamy base that stops a white kitchen from feeling cold. Those warmer tones work beautifully in Perth light, because they pick up the sun through the morning, instead of going flat and grey. Caesarstone and Stone Ambassador have lovely cream finishes too.
Porcelain Panels
Laminam and Dekton by Cosentino make sheets big enough to cover a whole wall with almost no joins. Porcelain is the one we recommend if you cook seriously, because it handles heat better than natural stone and it wipes clean no matter what lands on it. The sheets are big enough that you can take the splashback all the way up to the ceiling instead of stopping at your overhead cabinets, which looks especially good on the wall behind a rangehood. You can have marble, concrete or metal finishes, all slim enough for the wall and non-porous for easy maintenance and care.
Patterned Tile
Tile has been around forever and it still looks great in a kitchen. Herringbone, hexagons, scallops and long subway tiles all add a bit of texture that a flat sheet just can’t give you. It’s a favourite in Hamptons and French provincial kitchens. It’s also an easy way to bring in a second colour without committing your cabinetry to it. Don’t forget about the grout. Match it to the tile and you’ll barely notice it. Pick a contrasting colour and the pattern becomes the main event.
The Window Splashback
Swap the wall behind your bench for a window and you’ll get a view of the garden while you’re doing the dishes. It’s a wonderful choice for galley kitchens and for any kitchen with a wall close in front of you, because the natural light makes the whole space feel open. You do give up a section of overhead storage for it, so it’s worth raising with your designer early rather than adding it on later.
